My Journey Through Surrogacy
by: Jenn

Enter...The Agency

I received and application from the Surrogate Parenting Center of Texas. It was about 15 pages long and many of the questions were quite personal and involved. I didn't mind though. I figured, I just have to tell the "story of my life" and "why I want to be a surrogate" this one last time and that will be it. The agency will do the rest after that! I finished the application and sent it in. A few days later, I heard back from the agency. They had a potential couple for me...already! I was told a little bit about them, but, before I could meet them, we needed to schedule a meeting between my husband, myself and the social worker.

Well, before the meeting even took place, the social worker, Merritt, called me back and said that she was having second thoughts about matching me with this couple. She said they were kinda "on the fence" about the abortion/reduction issues and she had decided that another couple would be a better match. She told me a little bit about them, such as their names (Scott and Bev), occupations, and reason for infertility (DES), as well as the fact that they had tried IVF 7 times, unsuccessfully. She also told me that the IM (intended mom) cried when she read my application and said "This is the one! This is the one!" That made me feel so good and I decided that I wanted to meet them.

They would not be able to come and meet me for a couple of weeks, so, in the mean time, I went ahead and had my psych evaluation. I was required to take the MMPI and another similar test. Both tests asked odd questions, such as "Do you hear voices" and "Do you think others are out to get you"! (I answered no to both, in case you were wondering! :o)) After the tests, I talked to a psychologist for about an hour about my life, my childhood, and why I wanted to be a surrogate. All in all, I felt it went pretty well, but, the 2 weeks waiting for the results were very nervewracking! I wondered why it was taking so long. Maybe I *was* crazy! LOL! Finally, the results came back and Merritt informed me that the Dr. gave me a "glowing recommendation"!!! Whew!
