My Journey Through Surrogacy

23 Week Update - 9/2/98

Well, we had our US today and the babies are ........

A BOY AND A GIRL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  YEAH!!!!

Bev is soooooooooo excited!!!  The dr.'s US machine was broken and the new one was still not in yet, so we had to go to the hospital to have the US.  It seemed like we had to wait forever, but, they finally got us in there.  Unfortunately, the US tech had the bedside manner of Nurse Ratchet!  Scott couldn't come and, because we were in the hospital, Bev couldn't use the cell phone to call him.  Then, the US tech told Bev that she couldn't film the US because of hospital policy.  Bev was in tears!  She wanted so much for Scott to be able to see the US video, since he couldn't be there in person.  Finally, she said that she might let Bev tape a little bit at the end.  Little does she know that Bev taped almost the whole thing from behind her back!  :)

After about 10 minutes, I became really hot, lightheaded, and sick to my stomach.  I told the tech 3 times that I thought I was going to be sick and she didn't say anything.  Finally, I asked that the head of my bed be raised up a little to see if that would help.  She then suggested that I turn on my side a little bit and that helped a great deal.  Unfortunately, she had me turn away from the screen, so I didn't see much of the babies, but, I had a great view of Bev and her Mom's faces, which was just as wonderful, if not more!  :)  Towards the end, I turned around the other way and got to see the babies kicking eachother.  It was so cute!  We were trying to get a good view of the little girl's "parts" for the tape and every time the tech would come close to getting a good shot, the little boys foot would come flying into the picture and kick the little girl!  Then, the little girl started kicking him back and the next thing we knew, little feet and little legs started flying all over the place!  It was the cutest thing!  :)  Bev cried and cried and cried some more.  After all that we have been through to get to this point, I can't tell you how good it made me feel to see her eyes filled with tears of joy instead of sadness!  It was just beautiful!

The babies are right on track.  Actually, they are a couple of days ahead of schedule.  :)  The boy weighs 1 lb 7 oz and the girl weighs 1 lb 6 oz. Heartrates were both between 140 and 150 and the fundus is measuring at 32 cm.  As for me, I am up 23 lbs, which the dr. said was just right for where I am in the pg (23w 1d).  Everything looks great, at this point!

After the US, we went out to lunch and I gave Bev her "shower gifts" a little early.  Two gowns, two sets of booties, two rattles, and two of those stuffed animals (a bunny and a bear) that make the sound like inside the womb (mother's heartbeat, etc).  I thought the stuffed animals were appropriate coming from the woman whose heartbeat they will have been listening to all of these months.  She loved them and of course, cried some more!  :)  We joked about how funny it must have looked to others seeing her opening the gifts when I was the one who was noticeably pg.  We had more than a few stares...LOL!  Bev said, "they are probably saying, 'Look at that woman.  She won't even let her open her own gifts'!"  LOL!   We all just laughed!  I don't think anything could spoil Bev's mood or wipe the smile off of her face, right now and it is such an awesome feeling to know that I had a hand in it all.  This is truly the most rewarding and emotionally fulfilling thing I have ever done in my life!
