Surrogacy and the Media

The topic come up quite a bit, “What drove you to be a surrogate mother?” There is always a range of answers. Some women felt the call when they saw someone close to them suffer the pain of miscarriage after miscarriage, loss of a child still growing in the womb, or the countless other reasons that renders a woman childless. Others met a surrogate at some point in their life and saw the beautiful thing she was doing. Yet there is one group that is surprising because they choose to become surrogate mothers after reading an article that totally trashed surrogacy or watching a movie that could give many nightmares. Those woman thought that surrogacy couldn’t be so bad and even if that particular surrogate was, then they could do better. Whenever surrogacy pops up in the newspaper whether it be an agenda filled, front page article, in Canada or a sappy story in the Life section, Surrogate Mothers Online always gets an increases amount of classified ads from that geographical location. While their reasons for choosing to be surrogate mothers are different, they all have one common dream. They all want to see the look on the parent’s face as the dream of a child is fulfilled. It’s all about filling empty arms.

Another common thing about surrogate mothers is that they love to share the extraordinary thing they did. Reporters and producers like to take advantage of that trait. Don’t fall into their trap though, because they will accuse you of making babies for money and make you out to be among the bottom feeders of society. While it’s a surrogate’s dream of telling the world how truly awesome surrogacy is, it is a journalists dream of making the front page. Those newspapers don’t put sugar-filled sweetness on the front page, not even below the fold.

The best thing to do if a reporter contacts you is to politely decline and give no other information. If that 15 minutes of fame is what your after then check out other things written by that reporter by visiting their website and doing a search on the author or on surrogacy. If it’s a television producer who wants you, then think about what that show is about. Good journalism whether it be in print or on screen shows the good and the bad, but these days it’s all about the money. Yes, those reporters want to make a buck of off you. Drama and negativity boosts their ratings which, in turn, lines their pocket books. Most of them do not care, what it will cost you, as long as they get their check. If you don’t want to be made a mockery of, then just say no.
