Default Now WHAT??!! Ins. Co. added Surrogacy Exclusion!

After all we've been through...a canceled cycle, a failed transfer, cycle after cycle of no eggs, or getting eggs and having them not fertilize....Hubby and I just received our new Benefit Plan book--and guess what?? Low and behold there is a surrogacy exclusion!

My IP's just left for vacation to Myrtle Beach today, and I didn't have the heart to tell them before they left, nor do I have the heart to tell them while they are there.....I have no idea what to do now. I know I need to talk to them and see what they say....but i have to say....THIS JUST PLAIN BITES! We've been "working" together for over 2 years.....we are such good friends, and I really want to do this for them. This is gonna be one HELL of a long week....

I miss all of you, and am sorry I haven't been on hardly at all. We've had baseball (2 different teams), and I've been working on the house a lot, and once I sit down to SMO...I'm done...so I haven't been getting on LOL! I do miss reading everyone's updates though.....Hugs!!

Ahh man!!!

I think that has happened to a few girls lately. Maybe do a little search and see, or maybe they will happen to see this and help you out. I am sorry you have hit another bump in the road. Just hang on, you will get through it!

Thanks, Beth....this is certainly an option for us! I hate waiting to tell them though! All we can do is talk about it and go from there

No problem. You know I was scared too cause I thought my IP's were gonna say sorry and then it would all be for nothing (reason why i lost my insurance was cause i lost my job cause i was doing another surrogacy)

anyways...i lowered my comp a bit and that way the insurance policy wouldnt be any trouble for them.
GOOD LUCK!!

What did the benefit plan say? Most insurance companies that have surrogate exclusions apply to IPs....that the insurance will not pay for a surrogacy birth. However, most insurance companies fail to state that you will not be covered if you are the surrogate. So read it carefully and you might need to get your attorney involved to contact the insurance and get the right statement from them......

Good luck

I had a similar situation with insurance. My husbands company decided to change insurance to one that had an exclusion 2 DAYS after I started meds! It has been awful, but my IPs just found a plan with a maternity benefit and no exclusion.

If you do have your IPs purchase a plan for you, make sure you are not on any cycle meds when you apply. I got turned down by Kaiser because I was already on Lupron and Estrace because we were mid-cycle when we applied.

Best of luck to you!

Tera, I have Anthem, and while there was a 270 day waiting period, there so far is no surrogacy exclusion.

I am just now dealing with the same thing and have yet to actually find a solution. I found out the day after transfer, that Dh's employer changed insurance carriers. And the new insurance has a surrogacy exclusion. I am of course prego. This transfer worked. I cant apply for new insurance. Plus, I already applied to a bunch last year, and most turned me down.

Sorry you are having to go through this too.

We have Medical Mutual of Ohio. Here is what our Benefit Plan book says:

"Incurred as a result of any Covered Person acting as or contracting to be, a surrogate parent."

I think in bold print right above it it says "TERA...THIS MEANS YOU!"

Yes, this is a big pain in the butt!

I thing what it says is pretty clear, unfortunately. Honestly, I couldn't find anything related to the IP's!

Im hoping they don't say "sorry....", I have no idea how much maternity plans are....so i guess that will probably be what their decision is based on.

Most definitely, we will make sure I am not on any meds when I apply. Thanks for the tip!

Lucky for you! Wonder why the waiting period....or is that just for maternity in general? That would make sense though....

Hmmmmm....WOW...that's a tough one! Is there any way to get an extension of benefits from the previous insurance company? Let me know what you get figured out, okay? That's awful

Tera, the 270 day waiting period was for maternity benefits period. Even if it were my own pregnancy I would have had to wait 270 days for coverage, and that seems pretty consistent with the other policies I found, at least for Franklin County. I dont know if your county might have other options as far as carriers.
