Default Question for ladies who have gotten wisdom teeth pulled?

I just had all four of my wisdom teeth extracted this morning by an oral surgeon (so I was under anesthesia and asleep for the procedure). It is so painful even with the pain meds I am taking. How long does the pain last? I hope I will be ok to go to work Tuesday... This is going to be a long weekend!

I spent only a couple of days on Vicodin, and then Advil for a few more. I also consumed lots of jello and milkshakes (don't use a straw!), so as to not work the jaw too much or cause food to get stuck. When you do start eating solids, avoid peas. They are just the wrong size, and can get stuck in the extraction site holes.

However, bags of frozen peas work great as ice packs. They mold really well to your face (assuming they aren't frozen solid; if they are then whack the bag against the countertop a couple of times) and keep the swelling down.

The extraction was done on a Thursday morning, and I was back to school on Monday. It was a miserable 4th of July / 18th birthday weekend, though. Like you I was under anesthesia, because I had 2 extra ones that hadn't erupted yet and were in tricky spots.

    Good luck with your recovery!

I am no help I wasn't in to much pain. I had a traditional extraction (2) just last month. I didn't even take the vicodin. ( I am pumping and didn't want to compromise the milk anyway) Sorry you hurt!

As Tisha said, ice packs are your best friend!

Mine were impacted, so I also had an oral surgeon extract them. It was 2 weeks before I was able to eat solid food again. Lots of ice cream, soup, grits, jello and Gatorade.

I did not find that pain meds were helpful. Is it possible for you to get an Rx for a sleep aid such as Restoril before the weekend? That is really the only way for your body to heal is if you can get some quality sleep.

Do you have a water pik? That really helps to clean out the food debris.

When you sleep, try to have a couple of pillows under your head, this seemed to help reduce edema. Get a lot of DVDs!

Hope this helps...I wish you a speedy recovery!

I had mine out by a dentist in Italy and they didn't even offer pain meds. I was miserable for a few days. I think you would be okay on Tuesday. I was just really careful about what I ate.

OMG Ally, you're post is freaking me out. I literally got home 2 hours ago from having 3 wisdom teeth pulled(had the other pulled when I was 19,) and the pain is just starting to hit me now. I had local anesthesia and was awake for the whole thing! It sucked big time

Still waiting for my pain meds to be ready at Target, but luckily I still had some pain meds from my c-section 3 weeks ago, so I took one of those.

    I hope you heal quickly!

All 4 of mine were impacted and the first 24 hours were horrendous. But I also threw up a couple times after. I did a lot of yogurt with milk added. Mashed potatoes. And it was a week later and I still wasn't doing much. Hope you heal quickly

I was sedated as well, and I had 3 taken out. 2 were severely impacted and had to take out pieces of bone too. It hurt pretty badly for a while, about 5 days. But mine was a pretty rough extraction. I hope you feel better

PLEASE make sure you have something on your stomach with taking the pain meds continually. I ended up hospitalized for two days because I didn't eat enough for the strength of the pain meds. I hope you heal well!

Thanks for all of the tips and stories ladies! I appreciate it!

I am feeling MUCH better now than my last post. Once my gums stopped bleeding and I didn't need to put more gauze in my mouth, I was able to rinse my mouth out and eat some food. I skipped lunch today (bad, I know.. But it was not appealing when I was still bleeding) but I am eating some ramen noodles tonight (kind of entertaining since I cannot feel my lips or chin yet ha ha. Still numb!) I had yogurt earlier, too, and water is pretty much the only thing I will drink because they want me drinking clear fluids. No nausea yet and meds seem to be working so far. I only have taken one dose of the pain meds and it has been 5-6 hours since I took it and not feeling the need to take more yet. Hopefully I don't have to use the pain meds too much. The surgeon told me the left side of my mouth would hurt the most and probably swell because those two wisdom teeth were impacted. My right side was fine, though. I can definitely feel the difference between the two sides.

Kira, didn't mean to freak you out! I hope you feel better soon and got some good pain meds that work! I fully plan to have a great night's sleep tonight and send my almost-3-year-old son to school tomorrow so I can recover without him wanting things from me. I hope you have someone around the help you with meds, cooking, driving (if needed), kids, etc!

Oh, and as for a water pik... Do not have one, but the oral surgeon gave me a syringe to squirt water on the extraction sites after eating.
