    Default Breastfeeding while cycling?

Hi everyone! I'm new to GS, but I'll be starting meds in a month or so for my first FET. I'm wondering if anyone has breastfed through their GS. My concern is the meds leeching into the milk. My daughter's pedi recommended that I not wean her, that the meds would be fine, but I wanted to see what everyone else thought. (Since you guys have been down this road)

Are your IPs and The doctor aware that your still breastfeeding? For sure ask the REs opinion.

I was always under the impression that doctors wouldn't start cycling until you have stopped breastfeeding for several months and prolactin levels return to normal(I know women who had to lower their naturally occurring prolactin levels for ivf as the RE was concerned that the hormones would affect the pregnancy/increase misscarriage).

I've never heard of anyone being on cycling meds while breastfeeding...

How old is your child? How often are you breastfeeding?

The RE definitely needs to know that you're breastfeeding and how often. S/he may be okay with it, but from what I know the increased prolactin can affect your cycle. Also - they may give you doxycycline, and that can definitely go through breastmilk and may have an effect on your child.

Thank you Natasha (EmmaLexiMomma) for my siggy!

That's not a call your child's doctor should be making, that is for the RE to say. I highly doubt any RE will allow that.

That's kind of what I was thinking. It's not up to the pedi and the pedi is not involved in the IVF process you are going through. The pedi also isn't spending thousands of dollars on the process. Those things give your pedi a different perspective than what your clinic and IPs would have.

I wasn't BFing when cycling so it wasn't an issue. I've seen on here though that people had to stop in order to cycle. I've even known of it to be a question in agency applications. That aloe makes me think it's an issue of concern for the REs/clinics.

FWIW - Your concern should not only be about the meds getting into the milk but the affect BFing could have on the cycle.

I breastfed through my very first GS, but my son was 3 at the time and eating solids rather well. I talked at length with his pediatrician and also a lactation consultant.

Actually, it HAS been done, and by more than one person here on SMO.

I think I remember the screen name of someone else who did it, but since I am not for sure, I am not going to throw her name out there.

Yeah, when I read through some of those threads I found that as well - it was velobabe.

Most agencies I talked to wouldn't even match me until I had finished breastfeeding. The agency I am working with now said they would match me but I definitely couldn't start meds until my DD was weaned.

I was pumping for surrobabe#1 still when I had asked my agency to start putting my profile out again. They were told by our RE that he would not work w/me or allow me to cycle/transfer until I had weaned for several months prior. Yes, the med's may effect your baby/child somewhat, but I would be more concerned about the effect BF would have on the cycle and transfer. I would never want to jeopordize any shot my IP's have at success just because I was BF. They have too much at stake in the entire process to chance anything.

I have heard of several GSs doing it successfully and with the approval of their RE. Usually they were nursing toddlers/preschoolers infrequently. I think this is something REs evaluate on an individual basis - they are going to vary so much. A simple call to the nurse coordinator of the clinic should give you your answer. HTH!

Yes to this. I can think of 3 not including the ones in this thread, but their children were over 18 months and their prolactin levels were normal.

I was allowed to still breast in 06 when I began cycling, I was prescribed a BC that wasn't BFing friendly so I chose to stop BFing.( Natalee was 17 months old). My FIPs were very supportive of my continuing to BF and the RE was "okay" with it. Had I known how things were going to turn out I wouldn't have stopped feeding my baby. But hindsight is 20/20

Curious, everything went fine? Your son is fine and the transfer went fine? This doesn't apply to me at all but still curious that it can be done? Is it something new that woman cant be breastfeeding?

I apologize in advance for my spelling. I'm not stupid I just can't spell.

Everything went fine. He was 2 when I started cycling. Got pregnant on the first try with twins. He was 3 when the twins were born, and I nursed him through the pregnancy and a couple of years after the pregnancy.

Our RE makes his patients stop breastfeeding/pumping three months prior to cycling.

Here's my question: If prolactin inhibits the proper release of FSH and GnRH, wouldn't it solely affect ovulation? Wouldn't that be irrelevant in our case (as a GS)? I know it will also affect cycle regulation, but again, if you're on ocps, why does it matter? Can anyone clarify for me?

I'm having a hard time understanding why it would be a problem as a GS.

    Thanks Gina!
