Default exotic, unique, or unusual pet?

Does anyone else have an out-of-the-ordinary pet? What kind of reactions do you get from others?

We have a 4mo old hedgehog. People either think hes cute or want nothing to do with him lol

We used to have a hedgehog, a sugar glider, and other than that we had just the usual pets.

Oh... and some sort of teeny, tiny frog that we could never find out what he was (we found him hanging on the the side of a building). We had to buy special little bitty crickets to feed him. He was very small.

My husband and his ex wife did before we married. Squirrel, duck, very large snake. Lots of different animals. I know a lady who has a squirrel now. It's funny because the pet squirrel is part of their family and it is scared of the outside and of other squirrels!

I had a hedgehog too! He was cute, but a little stinker! I wish I had taken the time to find a good breeder. Instead I just picked one out from a pet store. He was never a friendly pet. Maybe if I had done it differently I would have enjoyed him more.

Now I have a bearded dragon, but I guess that's not really very exotic.

Oh yeah... we rescued a baby squirrel a couple of years ago. I saw him through our window trying to climb a really high tree in our yard and he kept falling (only able to climb about a foot up the tree). We were able to see his nest about 40 feet up. We contacted a wildlife rescue lady and she told us how to care for him for a few days before she could take him. She said he was about 4-6 weeks old. We syringe fed him until she took him. He was so cute!

ETA: I believe my sister used to have a chinchilla.

We got ours from a breeder, I havnt seen many pet stores carry them. He was very grumpy when he was quilling, but he seems a little friendlier now yet not as friendly as some that I see on the hedgie forum, we are trying to be patient with him. We have only had him for 7.5wks, he seems to like my husband the best lol

We have a sphynx cat. People seemed freaked out because she's bald. Some won't even touch her. She loves everyone.

We used to have many, until about 4 years ago. We had all
Sorts of reptiles, a Bengal tiger, a Siberian tiger, and a pair of coatimundis.

Now we have a ball python, a sulcatta tortoise, goats, pigs, chickens and geese.

We also had a hedgehog and miss her a lot. She's been gone almost 2yrs now, and I'd really LOVE to get another one. However, we currently have guinea pigs in that cage and DH says NO!! At least not until the piggies are gone. Once they pass, we'll probably wait a couple months (yea right...like I can hold out that long!) and I'm thinking this next time we'll get 2.

We have had chinchillas, ferrets, and bearded dragons. My SIL has a bunny that roams free in her house. I have taken care of wild rabbits before.

We have rats, Leo geckos, beardies, and Madagascar hissing cockroaches. Then dogs and cats too. I guess the hissers are the most odd. Really easy to care for and super funny.

Tell me more about the sugar glider. We were so close to getting two at the mall, until we saw the price.
I would still like to get a pair, but I'm really worried the cat would eat them.

Are they as "perfect" as the sales man made them out to be?

We loved ours. The office secretary at our school had one and brought it in one day. He just hung out in her little carrying pouch she kept with her all day. Very snuggly. Once I graduated and we got married, my DH and I got one. Ours wasn't quite tame yet so it took some time. The more you hold them the more they love you. They like to me snuggled close to you... like "contained" in something- snuggled up, so to speak. My DH had a hoodie sweatshirt that had the front pocket to put both your hands in that the glider would like to hang out while DH was wearing it. The thing I didn't like was how big of a cage you have to have for them to be able to "glide" from branch to branch in.

But... I'm no expert. We were very young when we had ours and it was over 13 years ago so it's hard for me to remember everything about him.

So I started looking up pictures of sugar gliders to show my kids just now and came across this....

It's all the "other" stuff that the salesman doesn't tell you. Apparently my DH and I were very ignorant on the subject when we had ours.

I wouldnt mind getting Dexter a friend but we dont have the space right now. I am on a hedgie forum and breeding has crossed my mind (little hoglets are so adorable), but its a big commitment so perhaps when Im done with surrogacy...

    Here is Dexter

In the pet carrier the day we brought him home:

    with my kiddos

    he plays tug-of-war with us

he's so cute when he's on his back tucked into a ball!

He sits/sleeps on my husband's shoulder often when he is in the recliner watching tv.
