Surrogacy and Egg Donation Q and A

Surrogate Mothers Online Q & A
  • Q & A: Just Starting Out - Egg Donation

For those just starting down the egg donation path. Topics may include finding the right match, pros and cons of anonymous vs. known donor, independent vs. and agency or broker, where to start, etc.

    6. My friend really wants a baby and requests that I donate the egg. I will be glad to but she is 48. Is that too old. Is there any way at all she can do this? - JB - Top

    JB,

YOUR age is the important factor as the egg donor. Most doctors will only accept egg donors aged between 18 and 34. After that, the success with donor eggs is limited and the risks of birth defects is high. If you are in the acceptable age range, it doesn't matter what age the egg recipient is. The egg recipient will have the same pregnancy success rate as for women the same age as the egg donor.

Example: The egg donor was 23 years old. The recipient was 40. Our success rate would be that of a 23 year old (somewhere around 60%) as opposed to that of a 40 year old (around 15%).

    Hope this helps.
