    20. What is a surrogate mother? --Samantha in Las Vegas - Top

    Samantha,

    Thanks for writing.

A surrogate mother is a woman who conceives and carries a child for another person or couple. An AI surrogate uses her own eggs and is artifically inseminated with the intended father's or a donor's sperm. A Gestational surrogate (GS) does not use her own eggs, but, would have either fresh or frozen embryos transferred into her uterus and hoping that the embryos attach to the lining. Medication is used for GS and very seldomly does a AI have to take any meds.

I hope this helps and good luck,

    Sherry - Updated: February 13, 2000
