Charity,

A surrogate does not "give up a child." In the case of gestational surrogacy, the child was never hers (the surrogate's) to give in the first place since it is from the genetic material of the intended mother and intended father.

In the case of traditional surrogacy, where the surrogate's egg is used, if not for the dreams/wishes/intentions of the intended parents, that child would never have been conceived.

Being a surrogate is not an endeavor undertaken lightly. All surrogates and intended parents should get to know each other very well prior to entering into a contract.

Lastly, in 99% of adoption cases, the birth mother has no idea who she's giving her child up to and most of the time has no further contact with the child. I still talk to our surrogate and send her pictures all the time. I think being a surrogate is a much happier experience than giving up a child for adoption.
