Surrogacy and Egg Donation Q and A

    21. My husband and I were just told that we should find a surrogate to carry our child. I wanted to find out what is involved as far as cost and legal information. We live in New Jersey. - Nancy - Top

    Dear Nancy,

As for the cost, the surrogacy process can be quite expensive. The surrogate on the norm can get from $10,000 to $20,000 for her compensation. Also, the IPS (intended parents) would have to pay for your lawyer and the surrogate's lawyer, all the medical costs (some have insurance that will pay for surrogacy), any prescriptions, life ins. policy, mileage, lost wages, clothing allowance, child care costs, etc. Some or all of the above may apply. It may be cheaper for you to find a GS surrogate independent versus going through an agency. All agencies have a finders fee. They would be your middle man and find you a surrogate that would closely match your wants and needs, however, every situation is different.

    Good luck,
