Surrogacy and Egg Donation Q and A

    8. Our surrogate is from Ohio and she has a health insurance policy with Blue Cross. They have told her that she couldn't use her policy to cover pregnancy care. Is that right? - Michael - Top

    Michael,

Your SM's insurance may not cover pregnancy. Some insurance comps require that you purchase a seperate rider for pregnancy. There are also some insurance comps that exclude coverage for any pregnancy related to surrogacy.

    Hope this helps.

    Michael,

Unless there is a surrogacy exclusion, I have been told that they have to cover the pregnancy. I would get the benefits books and read everything. Also, you may want to contact the attorney who is handling your contracts and see if he can write them a letter. I am very aware that there are many surrogates who have used them for surrogacy. But I don't know if they told the insurance company that it was for a surrogacy. Good Luck and I would suggest contacting the attorney who handled your contracts.
