    9. What is the best way to get insurance coverage for a surrogate birth? I would like the baby covered as well. Some of the companies I have looked at have surrogacy exclusions. One of the agencies I asked on the west coast covers only the mother but what if there are complications??? - Jene in IN - Top

    Jene,

Hello! This is one of the hardest things a surrogate has to face...insurance. Blue Cross Blue Shield offers insurance but has a year wait, meaning you have to pay for a year and then you can get pregnant. Mine does have a surrogacy exclusion but we just didn't tell them. It covered everything. My insurance doesn't pay for the neonatal costs, but the parents health insurance picked that up after the birth. Welcome to surrogacy, this is the fun part...making tons of phone calls and doing lots of foot work. I am located in Indiana, too. If you would like you can contact me privately and I can help you in any way possible.

    Dear Jene,

Thank you for your question. I feel the best way is to collect information on all types of insurance available in your state. Ask if they do cover surrogacy. I haven't heard of any insurance that covered the baby after its birth. The new parents should have some kind of insurance that would or will cover their child. If the birth mother has complications then that insurance shall take care of her no matter if she was a surrogate or not. Just hunt down an insurance that will fit your needs.

    Good luck,
